A chemical manufacturer was expanding production of their PTFE (Polytetrafluoroethylene) process, which required the construction of a new annex building adjacent to their existing polymerization building. Harrington Group provided the preliminary fire suppression, fire alarm, and other general life safety code criteria for the new annex building to comply with local building and fire codes as well as the Client’s insurance guidelines.
Due to the hazardous nature of the process components—which included flammable gases, flammable and combustible liquids, oxidizers, and other hazardous chemicals—the cost of constructing the plant expansion to the letter of the enforced building code would have been excessive. The code consultants at Harrington Group provided several performance-based design alternatives that would allow the building to be constructed at less cost to the Client without diminishing the overall level of fire or life safety incorporated in the building.
