We prepared a life safe code evaluation for the new Athletic, Recreation and Physical Education Complex at a major university in Georgia. This evaluation was necessary to allow the architect to utilize special provisions for smoke-protected assembly seating contained in NFPA 101, Life Safety Code.
Our life safety code evaluation included detailed code analysis, conservative hazard analysis, computer fire modeling, and egress time calculations. We combined the computer fire modeling results and the egress time calculations into a single time line and concluded that the building met the requirements of a smoke-protected facility as designed, without the addition of a smoke removal system.
This conservative evaluation provided a cost-effective solution for many aspects of the design of the building. Other cost saving items were presented for consideration, such as the elimination of automatic sprinklers over the event floor since the ceiling height over that area is greater than 50 feet.
