Harrington Group, Inc. is seeking an Engineering Quality Manager to join our team.

SUMMARY

The Engineering Quality Manager leads HGI’s quality organization, which endeavors to ensure the quality of HGI’s engineering deliverables to our clients. The Quality Manager establishes and maintains procedures and expectations for quality assurance and quality control in accordance with HGI’s Quality Management Policy (“QMP”). The Quality Manager nurtures the “Culture of Quality” at HGI, helping all employees recognize and accept that delivering quality is everyone’s job and is fundamental to the continued success of HGI as a company. The Quality Manager provides leadership for those designated in the company as Engineer-of-Record (“EOR”) and/or Quality Control Reviewer (“QCR”), helping these individuals be accountable in these important roles. The Quality Manager embodies all of HGI’s core values, but especially Competence and Service, which form the foundation for HGI’s legacy of delivering high-quality to our clients.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

  • Embody HGI Core Values of Service, Honesty, Integrity, Competence, and Respect
  • Manage the implementation of the Project Quality Management program for all engineering operations
  • Ensure a “Culture of Quality” is established and maintained throughout the company
    • Develop an onboarding training program that teaches the principles in the QMP
    • Champion the value of quality not only in our work life but in our personal lives
    • Be the example, and encourage all leaders to do the same
    • Encourage staff to generate quality improvement initiatives
    • Help each individual “own” and be proud of the quality work they perform
  • Establish and maintain written engineering standards to guide engineering staff on the “HGI Way” for key fire protection engineering topics
  • Work with the CAD/ BIM Practice Leader to develop and maintain appropriate drawing templates, drafting procedures, drawing checklists, libraries, etc.
  • Establish and/or maintain project delivery system procedures, best practices, forms, tools, checklists, procedures, guide specifications, drawing templates, and correspondence templates for project teams to utilize as part of the quality assurance plan established for each project
  • Review, update, and ensure conformance with the three-tiered quality review procedure outlined in the QMP
  • Administer the “EOR Quality Management” process in accordance with HGI’s Engineer of Record policy, including the performance of regular audits/ reviews of issued work products and holding a quarterly review meeting with all designated EORs
  • Recommend qualified engineers to be designated HGI EORs and maintain the official record of HGI EORs, along with any limitations and any disciplinary actions taken
  • Work with the Training Manager to identify training needs and develop high-quality training programs, including
    • Formal, in-depth training modules covering select subjects
    • Current and relevant training seminars/ videos
    • Training briefs and discussions to be delivered at regular engineering meetings
  • As required, recommend updates to the Quality Management Policy and the Engineer of Record Policy
  • Coordinate with project delivery teams and others to establish and standardize (as applicable) forms, tools, checklists, guide specifications, drawing templates, correspondence templates, etc.
  • Serve as EOR or QCR for projects, as needed
  • Teach, coach, and mentor team members as necessary to expand skillsets, build knowledge, and increase confidence
  • Serve as a senior-level engineering resource, as needed

 POSITION REQUIREMENTS

Education/ Experience: 

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in engineering or related field (preferably fire protection engineering or fire protection engineering technology) from an accredited college or university or other technical education appropriate for the position (e.g., hard science or related field)
  • Minimum of ten (10) years of diversified, mature fire protection engineering experience (e.g., water supplies, sprinkler systems, fire pumps, fire alarm systems, life safety, hazardous materials, fire/ smoke modeling, performance-based design alternatives, etc.)
  • Previous Lead Engineer or Project Manager experience (preferably within HGI) on a wide variety of projects

Certificates/ Licenses/ Registrations: 

  • Registered/ licensed professional engineer (preferably Fire Protection Engineering) or certified senior engineering technician (NICET Level IV)
  • Valid U.S. driver’s license
  • S. Citizen or valid work visa

Special Position Requirements:

  • Travel may be required to attend conferences, trainings, and meet with employees or clients
  • Most work can be completed in a regularly scheduled day; however, some work may need to be done outside of normal business hours

Reasoning Ability:

  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions
  • Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables
  • Must have the ability to work through a problem in a step-by-step in linear fashion successfully handling a moderate to high level of detail with accuracy and thoroughness
  • Must also have the ability to work through a problem laterally, merge problem elements and experiential patterns iteratively while trying many different combinations creatively, leading to a unique and optimized solution
  • Must be an effective learner having the ability to learn from experiences, books, and other media and apply that learning to subsequent problems and situations

English Language Skills:

  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations
  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public

Mathematical Skills:

  • Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations
  • Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra, geometry, trigonometry, calculus and financial functions

Work Environment/ Physical Demands:

  • Work generally requires the use of speech, sight, and hearing to communicate with clients and others
  • Work is generally conducted in an indoor office setting; however, occasionally, work at a client site may require work in outside weather conditions, in small spaces, and on ladders or elevated platforms
  • Frequently required to sit, talk, and/or hear; occasionally required to stand, walk, climb, reach with arms and hands, grasp with hands and fingers, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl
  • Frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds
