DULUTH, GA – October 29, 2007 – Harrington Group, Inc., a fire protection engineering consulting company, helped to educate their clients on fire safety during this year’s Fire Prevention Week. Harrington Group provided information to their clients to remind them of how important fire safety is at home, as well as at work. The information included a brochure prepared by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) with tips for creating a home escape plan, establishing a safe meeting place outside, staging a home fire drill, and escaping through smoke.

President and CEO of Harrington Group, Jeffrey L. Harrington, said this on the importance of the education for fire safety: “most homes in the United States are not provided with sprinklers, yet contain furnishings and other contents that can burn rapidly if ignited, threatening all who might be in the home. The average person does not understand fully just how fast a fire can grow to lethal proportions. Practicing evacuating a home quickly and without delay in the event of a fire is something every family should do regularly, at least annually.”

This year’s Fire Prevention Week was held October 7th – 13th and the theme was “Practice Your Escape Plan”. The first observation of Fire Prevention Day was on October 9, 1920. It was proclaimed by President Woodrow Wilson in remembrance of the Great Chicago Fire, which occurred on October 8, 1871. Fire Prevention Day was later extended to a full week in 1922 and continues to be the longest running public health & safety awareness program in the history of the United States.
