With nearly five decades of experience in fire protection engineering, Pat Nicholson brings an impressive depth of knowledge, a passion for problem-solving, and plenty of great stories to Harrington Group.
Pat joins HGI as a Senior Fire Protection Engineer on the Business Development Team, where he’ll help support the company’s growth into new industries and emerging markets, including data centers and other specialized sectors. Throughout his 48-year career, Pat has worked across an incredible range of facilities, from commercial and industrial sites to nuclear generating plants and Department of Energy facilities. Along the way, he’s built a reputation for tackling complex challenges and helping clients find practical, effective solutions.
Like many fire protection engineers, Pat’s career was shaped by an influential mentor. While earning his Civil Engineering degree at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (“WPI”), he developed an interest in fire protection through Professor Bob “Fitzy” Fitzgerald, whose guidance helped inspire generations of engineers in the field. That same connection eventually led Pat to HGI, where he reconnected with fellow WPI alumnus Jeff Harrington decades after their college years.
Over the course of his career, Pat has worked with leading consulting firms, operated his own successful consulting business for more than 20 years, and supported projects throughout the United States and Ontario, Canada. In fact, he jokes that all those years of travel helped soften his strong Worcester, Massachusetts accent.
What excites Pat most about joining HGI is the opportunity to help expand the company’s reach while bringing his experience into new business areas. His approach to engineering is simple: point him in the right direction, tell him what’s needed, and he’ll figure it out. That curiosity and adaptability have been driving forces throughout his career.
When he’s not working, family remains Pat’s greatest source of pride. He and his wife, Christine, have raised four children, all now in their 30s, and pursuing successful careers of their own. He’s also enjoying a new role as grandfather to a one-year-old grandson. After spending years traveling extensively for work, Pat is looking forward to spending more time visiting family and enjoying life’s next adventures.
A lifelong Boston Red Sox fan, Pat is an avid reader, a lover of music, and a devoted follower of comics. In fact, he believes that “everything you need to know about life can be learned from music and comics.”
