LEAD ENGINEER

Reports to: Project Manager
Classification: Full-time, non-exempt
Location: Remote

SUMMARY

The Lead Engineer (“LE”) is an experienced fire protection engineering professional who successfully leads the performance of engineering tasks on various projects from start to finish under the guidance and direction of the PM. The LE is responsible for the orderly completion of all project activities in alignment with engineering standards, quality standards, and other objectives established for the project. The LE becomes the primary technical resource for a project and is intimately familiar with all details of the project relevant to HGI’s scope of services. The LE coordinates multiple projects concurrently, ensuring each one progresses smoothly and on schedule. Additionally, the LE oversees the delegated work performed by Staff Engineers and, together with the PM and others, provides guidance and training to help develop staff engineers’ knowledge and skills to help prepare them to take on greater responsibilities in the future.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

  • Maintains intimate knowledge of all technical aspects of each assigned project relevant to HGI’s scope of services
  • Organizes and plans for the timely execution of tasks to ensure the project schedule is satisfied
  • Responds to external and internal communications promptly in accordance with HGI policies
  • Communicates information appropriately internally to keep PM and EOR apprised of project concerns and engineering decisions
  • Effectively communicates with clients, AHJs, consultants, and other stakeholders via telephone, email, and other means, as appropriate, with little assistance from the PM
  • Solves engineering problems using experience, judgment, and education, asking for assistance from PM or other senior engineers as needed
  • Develops creative and unique engineering solutions to complex problems while delivering value to clients
  • Performs and documents design development tasks with a high degree of detail and competence including (but not limited to) the following:
    • Due diligence/ code research
    • Water supply investigations
    • Hazard analyses
    • Hydraulic calculations
    • Equipment sizing and selection
    • Alternative designs
  • Produces engineering documents (e.g., drawings, specifications, reports, letters, narratives, etc.) that:
    • Are accurate, complete, constructible, and in general conformance with applicable codes and standards
    • Fulfill the contractual scope of services, and
    • Appropriately satisfy the client’s objectives (i.e., deliver the Best Total Solution)
  • Performs construction administration services with a high degree of detail and competence, including (but not limited to) the following:
    • Thorough review of contractor shop submittals
    • Detailed review of fire/ explosion protection system installations for general conformance to criteria documents and applicable codes/ standards
    • Facilitating and witnessing of fire/ explosion protection system acceptance testing
    • Timely, accurate, and clear documentation of findings and recommendations (e.g., letters, RFPI, markups, )
  • Assigns tasks, as appropriate, to Staff Engineers and reviews the completed effort for accuracy and quality; provides feedback to help less experienced engineers learn and grow
  • Educates clients relative to the available fire protection solutions and our recommendations so the client can make informed business decisions
  • Performs other research and engineering tasks as may be assigned by the PM or HGI leadership
  • 20-30% travel for construction period services is anticipated

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

Education/ Experience:

  • Technical education appropriate for the position (e.g., bachelor’s degree in engineering, engineering technology, science, or related field)
  • Minimum two (2) years of appropriate fire protection engineering experience
  • Proficiency in Revit/ AutoCAD design software and BIM 360

Certificates/ Licenses/ Registrations:

  • Registered/ licensed professional engineer (preferably Fire Protection Engineering) or certified engineering technician (NICET), or ability to become licensed/ certified within 24 months
  • Valid U.S. driver’s license
  • U.S. Citizen or valid work visa
  • Special Position Requirements:
  • Travel may be required to attend conferences, trainings, meet clients, and/or perform project-related duties
  • Most work can be completed in a regularly scheduled day; however, some work may need to be done outside of normal business hours to complete specific projects with tight deadlines
