There is a version of integrity that looks good on a wall. And then there is the kind that gets tested: in a hard conversation with a client, in a recommendation nobody wants to hear, in the decision to say something truthful when something easier is available.
At Harrington Group, Inc., integrity has been one of our six core values since the beginning. As we mark 40 years in fire protection engineering consulting this year, it is the value we find ourselves thinking about most carefully. It’s the one you cannot perform. It either shows up or it does not.
What integrity looks like in practice
In a technical field, integrity is less of an abstract ideal and more of a daily standard. It means being honest with a client when their preferred approach is not the right one. It means raising a concern when it would be easier to stay quiet. It means standing behind an assessment regardless of what outcome someone was hoping for.
Those moments are rarely comfortable. But they are the moments that define whether a firm can actually be trusted, and trust, in fire protection engineering consulting, is everything.
The long view
Forty years is a long time to maintain a client relationship. The ones that have lasted, some spanning multiple decades and many projects, were not built on price or convenience. They were built on a consistent experience of working with people who told the truth, did what they said they would do, and showed up the same way every time.
That is what integrity produces over time. Not a single impressive moment, but a track record. We have worked hard to build that track record at HGI, and it is something we take seriously as we look ahead to the next 40 years.
Why integrity requires a choice
As we reflect on four decades in fire protection engineering consulting, integrity stands out as the value that demands the most active commitment. Service and competence are things you develop. Quality is something you build processes around. Integrity is something you choose, repeatedly.
We are proud of the choices HGI has made over the years. And we believe the firm that exists today, the relationships, the reputation, the team, is the result of those choices adding up over time.
