As Harrington Group, Inc. (“HGI”) celebrates 40 years as a fire protection engineering consulting firm, it’s natural to reflect on what has made our company successful. While our projects, clients, and technical expertise have all played an important role, one factor stands above the rest: people.

Over four decades, HGI has grown from a small, founder-led organization into a fire protection engineering consulting firm with a broader leadership team, specialized expertise, and opportunities for employees at every stage of their careers. That growth hasn’t happened by accident. It has been built through a deliberate commitment to developing talented people, sharing knowledge, and creating an environment where employees can build meaningful, long-term careers. According to Daniel Lampke, Director of Engineering, one of the most significant changes he has witnessed during his time at HGI has been the evolution of leadership itself.

“As we’ve grown, we’ve recognized that growth creates opportunity,” Daniel explains. “A larger organization allows people to specialize, advance in their careers, and contribute in new ways. Our leadership team today includes a wider range of perspectives, experiences, and expertise than ever before.” That evolution has helped position HGI for continued success while maintaining the values that have guided the company since the beginning.

When asked what has contributed most to HGI’s long-term stability, Daniel points to two things: strong Core Values and quality people. “Our values aren’t just words on a wall,” he says. “They influence how decisions are made, how we support one another, and how we serve our clients.” Just as important is HGI’s commitment to creating an environment where people can thrive. “Like any company, we continue to grow and evolve,” Dan notes, “but HGI has always been a place that genuinely cares about its people. We’ve been willing to invest in employees, support their growth, and create opportunities for them to succeed.” That combination of values and people has helped create a culture where employees flourish over the long term.

One of the strongest themes from Daniel’s perspective is that leadership isn’t something people simply inherit. It is developed through experience, mentorship, and a willingness to learn. “Nobody is born a perfect leader,” he says. “Leadership comes from working with people, learning from challenges, and gaining the experience needed to guide others effectively.” At HGI, leadership development isn’t limited to formal titles. It happens every day through collaboration, project work, client relationships, and the sharing of knowledge between generations of engineers and professionals. As the company continues to grow, identifying and developing future leaders remains essential, not because of organizational charts, but because strong leadership helps preserve the quality, service, and client relationships that define HGI.

In a specialized field like fire protection engineering, mentorship plays a particularly important role. Fire protection engineering remains a relatively young discipline compared to many other engineering fields. As a result, much of the industry’s knowledge has been passed directly from experienced professionals to newer generations. “Mentorship is critical,” Daniel explains. “The technical knowledge is important, but so is understanding how challenges have been solved in the past and how we can apply those lessons moving forward.” For many employees, including Daniel himself, access to experienced mentors was one of the reasons HGI stood out. The opportunity to learn from recognized industry experts, collaborate with seasoned professionals, and gain exposure to decades of accumulated knowledge creates an environment where growth happens naturally.

That investment in mentorship helps ensure that valuable expertise isn’t lost. It continues to evolve and strengthen with each new generation.

As HGI enters its fifth decade, Daniel sees tremendous opportunities ahead. He sees a company that is becoming increasingly organized, collaborative, and capable of pursuing new opportunities while continuing to provide exceptional service to long-standing clients. “I’m excited about where we’re headed,” he says. “We’re building an organization that can continue to grow, communicate effectively, and make strategic decisions while staying true to what has made us successful.” The future of HGI won’t be defined by any one individual. Instead, it will be shaped by the people who continue to learn, mentor, lead, and invest in one another.

That’s how HGI has built 40 years of success, and it’s how we’ll continue building for the next 40.
