LEAD ENGINEER

Reports to: Project Manager
Classification: Full-time, non-exempt
Location: Remote

SUMMARY

The Staff Engineer (“SE”) is an experienced fire protection engineering professional who successfully executes engineering tasks on various projects under the guidance and direction of the Lead Engineer (“LE”) and Project Manager (“PM”). The SE is responsible for the orderly completion of all project-assigned tasks in alignment with engineering standards, quality standards, and other objectives established for the project. The SE is responsible for multiple tasks concurrently, on multiple projects, ensuring each one progresses smoothly and on schedule.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

  • Serves as an engineering resource for a project team on assigned tasks with competence, independence, thoroughness, accuracy, and creativity
  • Responds to external and internal communications promptly in accordance with HGI policies
  • Communicates information appropriately internally to keep PM, LE, and EOR apprised of project concerns and engineering decisions and assumptions
  • Effectively communicates with clients, AHJs, consultants, and other stakeholders via telephone, email, and other means, as appropriate, with little assistance from the PM or LE
  • Performs and documents design development tasks with a high degree of detail and competence including (but not limited to) the following:
  • Due diligence/ code research
  • Water supply investigations
  • Hazard analyses
  • Hydraulic calculations
  • Equipment sizing and selection
  • Alternative designs
  • Produces engineering documents (e.g., drawings, specifications, reports, letters, narratives, etc.) that:
  • Are accurate, complete, constructible, and in general conformance with applicable codes and standards
  • Fulfill the contractual scope of services, and
  • Appropriately satisfy the client’s objectives (i.e., deliver the Best Total Solution)
  • Performs construction administration services with a high degree of detail and competence, including (but not limited to) the following:
  • Thorough and detailed review of contractor shop submittals
  • Detailed review of fire/ explosion protection system installations for general conformance to criteria documents and applicable codes/ standards
  • Facilitating and witnessing of fire/ explosion protection system acceptance testing
  • Timely, accurate, and clear documentation of findings and recommendations (e.g., letters, RFPI, markups, etc.)
  • Performs other research and engineering tasks as may be assigned by the PM, LE, or HGI leadership
  • 20-30% travel for construction period services is anticipated

 POSITION REQUIREMENTS

Education/ Experience:

  • Technical education appropriate for the position (e.g., bachelor’s degree in engineering, engineering technology, science, or related field)
  • One (1) to two (2) years of appropriate fire protection engineering experience
  • Proficiency in Revit/ AutoCAD design software and BIM 360

Certificates/ Licenses/ Registrations:

  • Ability to become a registered/ licensed professional engineer (preferably Fire Protection Engineering) or certified engineering technician (NICET) within 36-months
  • Valid U.S. driver’s license
  • S. Citizen or valid work visa

Special Position Requirements:

  • Travel may be required to attend conferences, trainings, meet clients, and/or perform project-related duties
  • Most work can be completed in a regularly scheduled day; however, some work may need to be done outside of normal business hours to complete specific projects with tight deadlines

  • Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables

Work Environment/ Physical Demands:

  • Work is generally conducted in an indoor office setting; however, occasionally, work at a client site may require work in outside weather conditions, in small spaces, and on ladders or elevated platforms
  • Frequently required to sit, talk, and/or hear; occasionally required to stand, walk, climb, reach with arms and hands, grasp with hands and fingers, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl
  • Frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds
