Duluth, GA – March 18, 2008 – Jeffrey L. Harrington, PE, FSFPE, President and CEO of fire protection engineering firm, Harrington Group, Inc. was a keynote speaker at SUPDET, the Suppression and Detection Research and Applications Technical Working Conference on March 12, 2008, in Orlando, FL. The SUPDET Conference is an annual technical conference sponsored by the NFPA Fire Protection Research Foundation and the Society of Fire Protection Engineers.
Mr. Harrington’s presentation was titled, “Safety Factors in Design – The Evolution of Safety Factors in Clean Agent Design”. In addition to discussing the evolution of safety factors in fire protection design, the presentation also discussed safe design principles in the fire protection engineering practice. Mr. Harrington defines safety factors as those factors that are applied to a predicted value to ensure that a sufficient safety margin is maintained. He states, “Safety factors and margins allow a means to address probabilities and uncertainties faced by a fire protection engineer” in order to develop a more dependable fire safety design. Mr. Harrington concluded his presentation by saying, “Opportunities abound for fire protection engineers to be more explicit in documenting the safety factors and safety margins that are used in individual designs as well as in various design standards and guidelines”.
