DULUTH, GA — March 12, 2007 — Fire Protection Engineer, Jeff Harrington, was the featured speaker at the March 6, 2007 Fire Safety Annual Conference of the Society of Fire Protection Engineers – Greater Atlanta Chapter, Gwinnett Conference Center, Duluth, Georgia.
Mr. Harrington is the Chairman of the National Fire Protection Association’s Technical Committee on Gaseous Fire Extinguishing Systems (GFE-AAA) which is responsible for three NFPA standards: NFPA 2001, Standard on Clean Agent Fire Extinguishing Systems; NFPA 12, Standard on Carbon Dioxide Extinguishing Systems; and NFPA 12A, Standard on Halon 1301 Fire Extinguishing Systems.
Mr. Harrington’s presentation was titled Clean Agents and Class C Fire Hazards: New Developments. The presentation described details of numerous laboratory-scale tests conducted over the past decade on clean agent extinguishment of energized electrical fires. These tests revealed that energy augmented combustion can increase the clean agent concentration needed to extinguish the fire and prevent re-flash. Mr. Harrington also presented proposed changes to NFPA 2001 that, if approved by the NFPA membership and Standards Council, will require a design concentration higher than that required for Class A surface fires.
